Here I am. I arrived late in the day on Tuesday after a tiring 14 hours of travel. When I got off of the train in Riomaggiore, it was like I was getting off the orange line in Charlestown. Now, don't freak out those of you who worry about this. I am not going to up and move to Italy. I like my people, I have a lot of kids in my family and life that I want to see grow a bit. I'm not ruling out a month or so here (or Europe in general) each year nor am I saying one day I can't see myself relocating. However, for now, I'll settle for as much time as I can get.
I was very happy to see my friend Amy upon arrival. She had the keys to the apartment I rented and being a great friend, had some broth cooking in her office waiting for me. For those who don't know, after the stress I was under for over a year after the bombings, I ended up with a severe digestive illness, so I am on a special diet now that partly consists of drinking 1 quart of bone broth (made at home) every day. It heals the stomach lining and I'm in month 9 of 24 months.
After using her wifi to send a few messages that I'd arrived, Amy and I went to my apartment. It is right on the main street which is a perfect location. There are stairs EVERYWHERE here. I will snap some photos to show you. I don't mind them in general, but when you're exhausted and carrying luggage, it's nice to not have too many of them. Other days, it's a great workout since I won't be hitting the gym. ;)
I haven't taken my camera out all that much yet. I've been trying to just enjoy and settle in, so some pics will be from my phone, some from the go pro and some from my camera.
I unpacked in my beautiful temporary home. Here are a few pictures.
Jet lag is hitting me worse than ever. I think my body somehow knows I have time to adjust. I crashed at 10:15 last night but woke up at 12, still exhausted and eyes burning, but unable to go back to sleep. After trying to read and wandering around my apartment, I decided to go for a walk at 1:15 and ended up sitting using the wifi in front of Amy's office for a bit to text until finally around 2, I felt I could possibly fall asleep. I slept in a bit (only until 9:30) and when I showed up at Amy's office around 10:15, she said she didn't expect to see me until the early afternoon. Me too! ;) I had started my day with a nice frittata. Amy had introduced me to zucchini flowers when we went shopping yesterday and told me they great in frittatas so I took her word for it. It was delicious. I used onion, the petals and some prosciutto. I know, you're not getting the pics of croissants and pasta and pizza, but this girl can't have any of that, so you have to settle for nice healthy and fresh meals. ;)
Thanks for reading! Hope it didn't make you too jealous (it should)!
